When Cheap Online Gadgets Look Good but Don’t Last

My Experience with a Portable Tyre Inflator

In recent years, online platforms have made it very easy to buy gadgets at attractive prices. Many of these products look impressive in advertisements, with modern designs and high specifications.

However, the real question is whether these products can last over time.

A few years ago, I bought a portable cordless tyre inflator online. The product looked sleek and came with a digital display, LED light, and a claimed maximum pressure of 120 PSI. According to the specifications, it had a 7.4V rechargeable battery and a compact motor designed for car and motorcycle tyres.

When the product arrived, I tested it briefly. It worked well and appeared to function normally. After that short test, I packed it back into its box and kept it for emergency use.

Recently, when I tried to use the device again, I found that it could only operate when connected to the charger. The internal battery could no longer hold a charge.

Interestingly, the pump itself still works. The motor runs and the display functions properly, but the battery has apparently deteriorated over time.

This situation highlights a common issue with many rechargeable gadgets. Even if they are rarely used, lithium batteries can degrade over time, especially if they are stored for long periods without being recharged.

In hindsight, this portable inflator was probably designed more for occasional use rather than long-term durability. The motor and electronics may last, but the battery can become the weak point.

For consumers buying similar products online, there are a few lessons:

  • Rechargeable gadgets should be charged periodically, even if they are not used.
  • Extremely low-priced products may use lower-quality batteries.
  • Emergency tools should be checked occasionally to ensure they still work when needed.

The device still works when connected to external power, so it is not completely useless. However, it serves as a reminder that not all attractive online gadgets are built for long-term reliability.

Sometimes, the cheapest option can become expensive if it fails when you actually need it.

useful lesson:

Many emergency rechargeable gadgets fail not because they were used too much — but because they were stored for years without maintenance.

Power banks, inflators, torches, and even cordless drills suffer from the same problem.
